Belle Reynolds
encouraged her husband to offer his services to the Union, and then insisted on
going with the lieutenant when he marched off to war. Becoming a nurse with the
Seventeenth Illinois Regiment, she accompanied her husband to Fort Henry, Fort Donelson,
Shiloh, and Vicksburg. Belle didn’t return to the land of Lincoln until
Reynolds and his men were mustered out in May 1864.
